11 Golden Rules :-)

How to behave properly in an office

1. Never walk without a document in your hands
People with documents in their hands look like hardworking employees heading for important meetings. People with nothing in their hands look like they're heading for the canteen. People
with a newspaper in their hand look like they're heading for the toilet. Above all, make sure you carry loads of stuff home with you at night, thus generating the false impression that you work longer hours than you do.

2. Use computers to look busy Any time you use a computer, it looks like "work" to the casual
observer. You can send and receive personal e-mail, chat and generally have a blast without doing anything remotely related to work. These aren't exactly the societal benefits that the proponents of the computer revolution would like to talk about but they're not bad either. When you get caught by your boss - and you *will* get caught -- your best defense is to claim you're
teaching yourself to use new software, thus saving valuable training expenses.

3. Messy desk
Top management can get away with a clean desk. For the rest of us, it looks like we're not working hard enough. Build huge piles of documents around your workspace. To the observer,
last year's work looks the same as today's work; it's volume that counts. Pile them high and wide. If you know somebody is coming to your desk, bury the document you'll need halfway down in an existing stack and rummage for it when he/she arrives.

4. Voice Mail
Never answer your phone if you have voice mail. People don't call you nothing - they call because they want YOU to do work for THEM. That's no way to live. Screen all your calls through voice mail. If somebody leaves a voice mail message for you and it sounds like impending
work, respond during lunch hour when you know they're not there - it looks like you're
hardworking and conscientious even though you're being a devious weasel.

5. Looking Impatient and Annoyed Always try to look impatient and annoyed to give
your bosses the impression that you are always busy.

6. Leave the office late Always leave the office late, especially when the boss is still around. You could read magazines and storybooks that you always wanted to read but have no time until late before leaving. Make sure you walk past the boss' room on your way out. Send important emails at unearthly hours (e.g. 9:35pm, 7:05am, etc.) and during public holidays.

7. Creative Sighing for Effect Sigh loudly when there are many people around, giving the impression that you are under extreme pressure.

8. Stacking Strategy
It is not enough to pile lots of documents on the table. Put lots of books on the floor etc. thick computer manuals are the best.

9. Build Vocabulary Read up on some computer magazines and pick out all the jargon and new products. Use the phrases freely when in conversation with bosses.
Remember: They don't have to understand what you say, but you will sound impressive.

10. Have 2 Jackets If you work in a big open plan office, always leave a spare jacket
draped over the back of your seat. This gives the impression that you are still on the premises. The second jacket should be worn while swanning around elsewhere

11. MOST IMPORTANT: DON'T forward this to your boss by mistake

FLOSS Meet .. Thusharagiri and more ..

Guys and Gals,

I like to write more about the Floss meet held @ NIT Calicut..

FLOSS MEET @ NITC

We had a small inauguration function in Arya Bhatta Lecture Hall. I was sitting in the stage with Dr. S S Gokhale (the director of NIT Calicut), Dr. K P Mohandas, Dr. Abraham T Mathew Mr Sudhakar (Vice President of CSI) and Praveen ! .There were some 140-150 delegates in the AryaBhatta Hall .We had to Swap the sessions as Atul was coming Late ..

So We had "The Magical World of Python" by Swaroop and Pradeep was in the Morning Session.. It was a very Interactive session .. I couldnt Attend most of the part of it as I had to go to get the Wi Fi Connection in Atul's Computer ..I hope I will be able to attend Swaoop's talk in GEC Thrissur for the Rennaisance 2005. Pradeep talked about his Company Zeomega infotech, in the end. Swaroop had brought some Yahoo ! T Shirts along with him .. He didnt simply wanted to distribute it , so He asked some questions related to the Free software world , and those who answered first will get a nice Yahoo ! T Shirt. I was lucky to answer the name of the founderer of the free software foundation Stallman ..Wow I Have a nice Yahoo T Shirt now with me .. Praveen also got one .

Shanker Started the session after the lunch... Then Our LCD Started showing back the us .. We had to get a new LCD from the Library .... Thus the session started late by 30 minutes .. It was a interesting talk about the BSD , The Devil's Side of Open Source" .. He told about the BSD Licence .. I now consider to learn that ..

Then we had the Talk by Atul Chitnis about the FLOSS, and its effect in India. It was so intersting.. Most of the students rated his speech as A + . If you like to see a person who can think and speak at the same time , then there is only one person that is Chitnis.
I went to meet our speakers in the Guest House in the night .. I enjoyed having food with them .. In between the food Shanu was explaing about the differnt kerala dishes to others.. After that I expressed my doubts about the IT Field and companies to Atul and Shanu.. They also wanted my to become a Geek ... i dont know if a Geek is made or born . Am I Already a Geek ? Dont Know ?
I took Swaroop and Pradeep to show Our campus .. I showed them most of the parts of it , our Main CC, hostels , Library etc.. They were amazed by the size and greenary of our college.. Praveen showed Swaroop the Ubuntu Linux and he seemed to like it also .. I Like those guys ,, I felt so intimate to them also ....

THUSHRAGIRI

We Planned to go to Thusharagiri Waterfalls in the Sunday ., As usual I have to wake up Praveen.. We reached the guest house by 9 am .. and the Tata Sumo was also ready.. But our friends were still sleeping .. So we started the journey at 9 30 am .. They road to Thusharagiri is pretty Okay and its freee from the City traffic..

There are some shops in the down hill of Thusharagiri were yu can actually order for the food in advance.. We ordered for Chappathy and Meals. We started climbing .. There are actually 5 Waterfalls and you can cover only 3 in one day .. otherwise you need to stay there in the tent . The names of the waterfalls are funny, it is like Thenn Mala ( Honey Hill )... It is really a tiresome journey .. But adventurous.. Praveen had already came there for the NSS Camp .. So he was sure about the Paths through the forest.. You can find and feel the Real " Gods Own Country There "Swaroop was trying to take " Every Bit of Thusharagiri in his Digi Cam " .. I dont know if he has succeeded in that ... Need to check his photo Album .

We were very hungry by the time we reached back to the station... Praveen and Me Had the rice meals.. which tasted delicious... Swaroop and Pradeep had Chappathy.. ( Dont know how it was ! ). We were all sleeping in the Car in the return journey. All were deadly tired... But Swaroop still showed his enthu to climb the 4th Waterfall too... Amazing Man ...

Ya me and praveen accompanied to the Railway station in the aftenoon.. I showed them the Regal Bakery.. All of them except Shanu bought a lots of sweets and Bannana Chips... They bought the parcel food for the Dinner .. The Train came in time.. we had to run to the Front side , as the AC Coach was a bit far away. We thanked all for coming here to our college .... Probable we will meet them all in the next Linux Bangalore ( oops!.. sorry LB's Name is gonna change right so in the next OSS meet organised by Atul. ) .

Every thing is over ..Still the fire is burning in us ... It will be there for a long time.. Hope that most of the student attended the FLOSS MEET , will be move toward the Patent Free world of Softwares. I dont know how to express my thanks to Swaroop, Pradeep, Shanu, Atul , Praveen, Aswin, Jove, Bibin, Pullat and other who co operated with the event. Thank you all !
Bye

FLOSS Meet Over ! Complete Sucess

Friends,
The Program was a grand sucess !.
Usually we say good things come in the end, i feel it in the other way round. Every thing was going on fine as planned , then our LCD Projector stopped workling (Atul told he heard some sound in from the projector, I believe for replacing the lamps it will cost around 8000 Rs, so the afternoon session was a bit delayed.
Will write about that later . Yep, showed Swaroop and Pradeep our Main CC .
Hope they enjoyed our campus also.
Good Night All

Two days to Go !

yep, I ( Actually we :-) me and pravi) couldnt update the blogs for two days. We were (are) really busy with the FLOSS MEET . This is going to the last program in my B.Tech Days. Only 3 more months in this college.. Its really a sad thing . I still remembers the days in A Hostel( Room No 315) , B Hostel ( Room No 202 ) then to C Hostel( 128) and finally to D Hostel(143 and 220). Its really hard to conceive.
Then about the FLOSS Meet, almost everything is ready, we got aroung 50 registrations itself from the first years and expecting to have about 10 to 20 from our year . The 2nd years and 3rd years are hard to predict. I will go to the MCA Students and M.Tech Students Hostels today. So need to get 30 from them . My Friend Vishnu was suppose to come for the Event from Palakkad NSS, but he cancelled due to the Special Class.
Today we have 1. Got the Permission for Atul to configure the Wi Fi 2. Met Mahesh and give the Banners to be made ( Simple Banner ) 3. Arranged the food during the event( I had a smaill Fight with Mohandas Sir about the vegeterianism, there is still Chicken in the menu and I cant stand for it , Praveen is also in my side ). 4. Got the Help from Chandra Mohan sir to make the Butter paper for screen printing the Files ( flaps that are to be distributed during the event ) 5. Praveen went to the Press club to distribute the printed matter to the differnt newspapers.

Places of Interest

I like to write some details about the beautiful places in and around Calicut. This will be helpful for our Speakers coming for the FLOSS Meet @ NIT Calicut. I got most of the details about Calicut from this website . The Site clearly mentions about the different destinations around Calicut

Sheik Ibn Batuta (1342-47 AD) explains Calicut like this !
----------------
We next come to Kalikat one of the great ports of the district of malabar and in which merchants from all parts are found... They put a thief to death for stealing a single nut, or even a seed of any fruit, hence thieves are unknown among them...
----------------
Everything about the different " Places of interest", "History of Calicut", "Other tourism details " etc is given nicely in this site.

i suggest for the following places for you !

1. Thusharagiri
Thusharagiri is situated 55 kms away from Kozhikode City and the 'Green Splender' considered as the major tourist destination in Malabar region with four water falls right in the middle of the forest. The waterfalls and streams amidst the hilly regions are really a feast to eyes

Some Photos of Thushara Giri
Thusharagiri 1
Thusharagiri 2

Thusharagiri is near to our college also. It will be really an enjoyable trip also :-)

2. Kozhikode Beach
The Beauty and serenity of Kozhikode beach is not yet exploited to develop it into a tourist centre. Still People from all around gather here to enjoy the sunset and it is a popular retreat for local people. Two sea piers almost 125 years old extending well inside the sea are a speciality.

3. GhatSection
This is thick dense forest and is called the " Chirapunchi" of kerala because of the high availablity of the heavy rains. It is about 44 Kms from Kozhikode and is the boundary to Wayanad district. A journey through this ghat section is enjoyable experience . It is 14 kms long with nine hair pin curves amidst a number of hills and thick forests. A view from the top will be a breath taking experience.

4. Thali Temple
An ancient temple. really worth to see. :-)

5. Kappad Beech

On 27th May 1498, Vasco-De Gama landed here with three vessels and 170 men. If you travel 16 Kms north of Kozhikode by kannur road, a small road near Tiruvangoor health centre guides you to this beach of historical inportance. A monument is here to commemorate the historical landing. An ancient temple on a hillock, facing the deep sea, is an added attraction.

I think swaroop desperately wanted to see some of the Kerala Beaches right ?....

6. House Of Othena
An ancient Hero . But the place is far from our college

7. Kadavu Resort ( 5 star Resort ) Very Expensive ! But really nice , we use to have our class treats there ..

Exams Over !! Back in Home..

This is the first time i am writing the Blog from my home. Artificial Neural Network was cool ! not difficult. Three application type questions.
----------
1. What can you'do' and ' not do' with ANN ?
2. Design a model algorithm through which it can predict the future water level in a particular river. The water level mainly depends on the rainfall. We have the previous rainfall Vs water level values available, now we need to predict for the current year !
3. Some match the following type.
-----------

Our Final Poster is printed and we printed it in the A3 Sheets. We have released two versions of posters, which i will put up in the website soon.
See our website, we have edited the profiles of most of our speakers. and we may try to distribute some Ubuntu GNU/Linux CD's during the program .. Back in home I was awaited with about 90 CDs...

-----------
A Word about our Sponsors for FLOSS@NITC:
Till now we haven't talked much about this. TCS has agreed to sponsor for the event. I am sure about the money, but a fair amount. Also along with the CSI Parent chapter, IBM ACE centre and Dept of Computer Science and Engineering, our part is safe, I hope. So we havent yet tabulated on the total expences. We were planning to keep a (very) nominal registeration fees and provide the delegates the Lunch, Tea, Some CDs. + Writing Pad and Pen.

Two more exams over .... Edited the Posting Option !

I did a lot today. Got up at 5:30 am and studied a lot. Wrote the morning exam well ( In the sence I will pass on that ). Morning we had the Instrumentation Systems and after that Power Systems. Instr Systems paper had some problems that even Shankar couldn't understand. Power Systems too had some problems..

Pravi complainted that He is not able to write any comment in my Blog page. I checked the options Alas ! I found it .. There was an option that the Comments from the Anonymous should be accepted or not ? I am going on with the former.. Lets see what is going to happen.... Previously I saw Swaroop's page in which he had complainted about the Spams and unnecessary commments.

I still dont know if any free servers is allowing us to configure the Word press. I really need that. Me and Pravi is going to check the WordPress once in the TuX Machine.

We took the Print out of the FLOSS Meet Poster Version .3Beta :-). Still lots to improve. The printed page is not fully coming to one page completely.. May need to change the Size of the Page.

Tomorrow we are going to Take the print out of the Poster.
One more exam to go !! ANN Artifi Neural Network.. Dont know how the Paper will be ??

Bye Time to go and Sleep: Dilip

Listed in Google ! And More .....

Wow ! It was really amazing to see our FLOSS Site listed in the best search engine GOOGLE . And one more unexpected thing was when you search for "NIT Calicut" in google you can see Praveen's mail in Fsf- friends.
We are modifying the poster . Dr. KPM is in trivandram now. So he will be coming back on thursday so we will finalise the poster and print it . We need to distribute it to Malabar Christian College and other colleges near by.

2 exams are over 1. Economics and 2. Industrial Drives. Economics was easy, I wrote it well ( Full of Gas ) and the second was Industrial Drives was really tough. I was sitting near to one senior PG Student, Veena G . She had promised to help me during the Exams, but disappointed me. Wat kind of behavior is this ? Its the basic principle of FOSS to help, distribute our own copies to others. Then why there is discimination in this ? I was thinking of starting a movement named " Free Distribution of Answer Papers during the Exams." How is the name ? If any one want to join contact me . First come first serve basis. Extra Edge for the toppers.

Two exams on tomorrow . Need to Study. Pappy Mam is going to kill us !.

good Night ! Sweet Dreams !

Nice Weekend !... FLOSS Meet @ NITC Poster ....

I dont know why my weekends are always good ! May be beacuse i dont need to sit and waste time (?) attending the boring lectures, may be beacuse i can get up late and do whatever i want, or may be because i can see a lot of movies.
I saw 5 movies altogether within the last 2 days.
1. ThoovanaThumbikal ( Mohanlal and Parvathy, Good happy ending Parvathy looks superb in some shorts)
2. Ennenum Kannettante ( It made me really Sendy, I wonder why director Fazil made such a movie to make me cry for a long time. Still we call movies as an entertainment :-) )
3. Manichithrathazhu ( Mohan lal and Sobhana, Nice movie seeing the movie for the third time )
4. Padayappa ( One and Only one RajaniKanth , Action, Songs are classic )
5. Gupt ( Bobby Deol, Kajol, Manisha Koirala Nice unexpected ending, Good songs.)

The Poster for the FLOSS Meet is ready ! It was praveen's idea to make it in the Gimp, and we did it . Praveen Shyam, Tojin ( he wanted to call himself as Creative contributer for FLOSS Meet ), did the most of the part of it . And the lazy man ( me ! ) was there to criticize any every point !

See the poster :

Its was really hard to make the site finally available for outside campus. Yes you can now access
1. OFFICIAL FLOSS MEET WEBSITE . 2. FLOSS WEBSITE .
IBM Ace centre has confirmed about the Sponsorship ! .. Altogether a bright day ...

Yrstrday I downloaded the 'Festival' Text to Speech tool. I Had first seen the tool when Atul demonstrated it during the Inagural funchion of LB/2004 . After reading the documentation of Festval, I was fully Enthu about it . you can literally do whatever things you want with that. Think about your computer telling yu that "you have got a new mail " soon it reaches your mail box. Howz it ? Really amazing right .
If you have never tried the Festival try it today . The new version 2.0 Beta is released you can get it from here .

Website is up ! and Not running :-)

The Website is up ! and Not running :-)

Ther are still some problems with our campus networking center . Riyas, network admin told me to work with me tonight and solve it . Still the page is not able to be accessed from outside ( Ofcourse we tried from different computers in the campus, No problem its working nicely ). There is still some problem .Pradeep , one of our key speakers for the event told me he isn't able to see the site, 1000 thanks to him ( The first official tester of the site :-) ). Hope the site will be OK by tonight.

Today afternoon I went to the Amritha Cyber Cafe in Kattangal and checked it ! Pradeep was right, Its showing the error " Cannot connect to http://glugc.nitc.ac.in/ ". Later only i thought about the GREX, we can get a free account in the Cyberspace.org , telnet in to that and from there we can try the site . This will help us to find if the page is available in the outside community.

Still lots of works remaining 4 the FOSS Meet.
1. Design the poster/ and get the sponsership for that from IBM-Ace center
2. Need to finalise the travel plan of the Speakers.
3. Make the Online registeration form in the Website for the outside Delegates.
4. Get the permission for the Bhaskara Lecture Hall.
5. Arrange for the Food .
6. Contact the GNU/Linux Team in Trivandram and need their help

Nothing special happened in the Class today. As usual Misha Mam, Preety Mam, Padmakumari Mam took the boring classes.. Some how i will be free after 3 months. Long live dilpu !

Thats all 4 now !

Another Hard Day :-)

Mondays are always bad ! Why ? Its because We have all the 4 Morning classes Plus one 3 Hr Lab Session. Also Ancy Madam will always find something wrong with every one's rough record and fair record. Today under the leadership of jayajith and Karthik we decided not the submit the fair record. What happened ? Atleast for about 15 minutes she was shouting like anything ! We all pray (hope) her to leave the college after her wedding on 21 January.

I have almost finished reading an excellent book by RAJA RAO - The Serpent and the Rope. This is one of the sweetest book i have ever read. The Novel had won the Sahithya Academy Award also. The novel describes the story of a Brahmin Ramaswamy who goes to France for higher studies meets a French girl from there and Marrying her. The story describes the true love, passion among them. The Girl Madeline really started to luv the Indian culture, traditions etc. Moreover there are wonderful verses of the Great vedas and Puranas in between. Let me recollect some lines ,
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Truth is the fact of existence. That is truth is the essence of fact; and as such truth and existence are one and the same. Man sees himself in woman as essence, the fact of womanhood is the meaning of life. If they are nothing in order, you could not know that you are. If Parvathi had not sat and prayed that Shiva would open his eyes and there would be no world.
Love is the honey of knowledge, knowing is sweet because woman is . "
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The book is for all who r planning to wed a foreigner :-). Sorry I am always an exception. Mama will kill me .. Still religion place an important part in our minds.

I am now along with Shyam (Admin of this project) and pravi is in the work of the website for the upcoming Floss meet. All the speakers are fixed and the event is really going to Rock all the NITC.

A lovely weekend :-)

Yet another weekend. we had the class treat @ Kadavu resturant y'strday bythe 2nd batches of placed students which includes Pravi, Xavier, Nidhin, Frank,Rahul,Peppe,Pramod,MS sorry i coulnt recollect all !. More over its a lovely and expensive place where they charge aroung 250 bucks for one person . The Resturant is near to a river, and you meet lots of foreigners there.
All my weekends, i use to spend (rather waste )for seeing movies. Today I saw 2 movies
1. Pulival Kalyanam ( staring Jayasurya and sweet Kavya)- This is a lovely movie with lots of new and old numbers, like Shake Abdulla. also i liked the song Aru Paranju, Aru paranju, Njan Kandathu Rakkanavanennu Aru Paranju. .. Its really a nice song composed by Kaithapuram.
2. Lovely ***. I dont remember the name. nyway its nice tooo. The whole story happens in the X mas month, where the director shows the get togethers, sharing love.

Today i went to muneer( Paneers) And copied some movies from the F Lan to my Harddisk. Hence I have to finish them by atmost tomorrow.

I still have to complete my Linux Networking course. c'mon, be a Vivekanada, Dont Stop still your Goal is achieved. Lets put the Dream as Yahoo and Intel, Then you will atleast turn up in HP or IBM.

Got my self Patched

Yep, I dont know if you take that word 'patched' in the sence i meaned it to be. I today got my self injured after running under the time pressure. This will/would have happened to all of you, when yu are so busy with something, so time runs out from you. you care nothings all the things will be vague and you may end up hitting a tree. The thing happened to me was , I was having a Film which was not given for washing for a month. so decided to give it to our dada, jayajith. So to reach him fast I took a cycle from my friend. But some how i just didnt care while driving and fall out from that. My Left arm is still painign . so inorder to type the alphabets A, B,C etc, My right arm has to move from right to left and do the job.

Not moving further, Started the work of Unofficial guide to NITC

Alexander the Great ?

The Greatest Legend of all was real

I dont know wat happened to me 2day .. Not feeling good ..
Saw the MovieAlexander . The movie is bit lengthy but a full entertainer. Collin Farrel has done a great job as Alexander, and the tomb raider girl acts as his mother. The story is a bit twisted to make Alexander a real hero, but is it like that ? In the movie they are not fully showing the war between Alexander and Moguls when he came to invade India. Shankar has told me that Alexander fully got defeated and left with nothing but with some of his close associates. He also got married to an Indian girl. Wow ! great Indians.

About 2day's Classes all the classes were as boring as us usual, Misha's bla bla, Papy's boo boo and what is new in the class room ? Nothing , absolutely nothing , Its really the worse semester.Ya some thing new i can do in the class room is, sit in the back bench and "think about the things thats never gonna happen-like how to surpass all these stupid teachers etc "
Also I new idea came to mind is to do some thing for the benefit of our juniors like making an E book that helps them to get rid/overcome all the stupids in our college and earn good marks. So I decided to start the work of " An UNOFFICAL GUIDE TO NITC" howz that ? If you have any comment on the subject do mail me .

Debian is Great !

Ya I understood the power of DEBIAN .Its really great. You may try that by just opening a 500 Image files using the Animate command. I tried the same in the Fedora core 3. It got stuck. In debian it just took 30 Seconds to open the files. Also one dis advantage i found is that, I was not able to configure my Nvdia card for it. Also Xine get some times stuck after playing. I found the remedy, going for Mplayer which is the best media player in Linux and Windows ( Try the Windows Version Even the Bsplayer is the simple GUI for Mplayer ).

Some thing Great that i Never expect to happen happened on y'strday night, I telephoned my Elder sister Smitha. As you all dont know, I wasn't in good touch with her. this somehow reduced the distance between us bt not fully. Also I didnt get even one response from Manju Oppol after coming back from US. Should I call her ? Is it my Jhada preventing me from that ? Dont know . Need to find it out.

Electrical Drives exam was cool ! I was in the last bench sitting with Shankar and also with the text book open( kept under the table ) . I could write all the questions correctly . Thanks to SHANKAR AND DUBEY.

Time to Go and Sleep.

Gonna try Debian !

I got the Debian sarge DVD with the december PCQUEST. I am not at all fully satisfied with the Fedora core 3. I heard from one friend that Debian works nicely even with 128 MB RAM. Also the memory managment is very good. Y'strday night i reinstalled the XP . After reinstalling the XOSLalso i was unable to boot to my Fedora . So now trying to reinstall the GRUB and some how rescue my Linux. Today is gonna be a hard time for me .. Lots of work to do ! 1. Have to complete my Lab record and write the rough record for tomorrow.
2. Misha mam is conducting the Electical Drives test tomorrow. Need to prepare 4 that.
3. Wash the clothes.
4. See atleat one movie.
Have a nice day !
